Become a Trained Behavioral Health Interpreter
This 2-day (14-hour) intensive training is for bilingual staff who use their linguistic skills to interpret or who have an interest in becoming a trained interpreters in behavioral health settings. Participants must be fluent in English and at least one other language; prior experience as an interpreter is not required. The training is taught by two highly skilled, experienced instructors who provide a dynamic learning environment which keeps participants actively engaged. Training is provided onsite for up to 35 individuals.
Training Outcomes
- Practice and gain proper interpreting skills and the roles and responsibilities of an interpreter
- Increase knowledge about federal and state regulations for Limited English Proficient (LEP) persons and patients rights including ethical considerations
- Learn behavioral health terminology used in behavioral health settings
- Identify models of interpreting and challenges facing interpreters
- Understand how culture influences health beliefs and culturally and linguistically appropriate encounters with LEP clients
- Practice techniques used in pre-session, during the session and post-session
Training for Monolingual English Speaking Providers on How to Use a Trained Interpreter
One day (7-hour) training for monolingual English speaking provider staff on how to successfully work with an Interpreter in behavioral health settings. Training is provided on-site for up to 35 individuals.
Training Outcomes
- Increase language access knowledge of the legal and ethical responsibilities of serving LEP populations
- Understand the roles and responsibilities of interpreters and monolingual English speaking staff who work with interpreters
- Understand how culture influences health beliefs and culturally and linguistically appropriate encounters with LEP clients
- Learn skills and techniques for managing the clinical triad between interpreter, client and provider staff
- Practice techniques used in pre-session, during the session and post-session
