Sixto Aguirre, CPSW
Rio Arriba County
Sixto Aguirre is a Certified Peer Support Worker (CPSW) in Rio Arriba County. He started drinking around the age of nine or ten and soon progressed to smoking marijuana to partially deal with the loss of his grandmother. After moving from Utah to New Mexico, he frequently got in fights at school as other children made fun of him for being “half-Mexican.” His mother sent him back to Utah at the age of 12, where he got into gangs and drugs such as crystal meth. At the age of 17, Sixto was sent back to New Mexico where he began using cocaine and crack. After the loss of his daughter’s mother in a DWI crash, the courts removed Sixto’s daughter due to addiction. In 2016, during a a drug-induced binge, Sixto passed out in his truck with his 6yo son in the backseat. After this experience, and being incarcerated and a short stay at a recovery center, Sixto made the choice to become sober for his children. He started attending recovery meetings, and channeling his energy into positive activities. Sixto took classes to become a CPSW, and passed the test, where a judge hired him to run a peer-supported probation program. He now stays clean and sober to be a positive role model for his children and his community.
