DESCRIPTION:This one-day event focuses on mental health and substance use research recommendations for the Hispanic/Latino (H/L) community.  NLBHA will present its eCompendium of Evidence-Based Practices (EBP) and Guide\, curated by the Evidence-Based Practice Subcommittee (EBPSC). \n\n\n\nEsteemed speakers include Dr. Nora Volkow\, Dr. Lisa Cacari-Stone\, and Dr. Cristina Rabadán-Diehl\, will address community-based research challenges and the need for new innovative research efforts for the Hispanic/Latino/a community.    \n\n\n\nThrough a participatory-based approach\, the attendees of the symposium will contribute to developing directions and recommendations for future Hispanic/Latino/a/ practice\, research\, and policy. \n\n\n\nThe Symposium will contribute to the development of a Latino Research Policy Paper that will document findings and recommendations to inform the advancement and development of Latino evidence-based practices and programs. \n\n\n\nThis policy paper will be distributed to various stakeholders including community-based organizations\, research centers\, policymakers\, and government entities. \n\n\n\nNLBHA will propose recommendations for improving research equity and addressing disparities in Latino behavioral health research and practice.

DESCRIPTION:Join us in providing the children of Taos a fun\, safe\, and supervised Taos Bike Rodeo for the purpose of building youth awareness of promoting cycling for fun\, transportation\, safe biking practices\, and fitness. Statistics reveal that many young people are involved in bicycle-related crashes. We need to find ways to ensure that our youth are better informed about road safety. We hope to be able to successfully convey this type of message to young people during this Taos Bike Rodeo. Riding safely is fun. This event will expose youth to the skills they need to be safe cyclists. \n\n\n\nThere will be skilled activities\, exhibits/booths\, games for the youth\, and free drawings for bicycles in different sizes. The Taos Police Department will provide child fingerprinting. Free event t-shirts will be given to the youth completing the activities and visiting the booths and games. Free helmets will be provided for children needing a helmet while supplies and sizes last. Refreshments will be provided. \n\n\n\nEveryone Deserves will provide education on the importance of behavioral health and assist with referrals to behavioral health providers and resource navigation.

Since 2012\, Ralph has been clean and sober. He has committed to being a positive influence in the community. He is currently the Co-Founder and Chair of the Espanola Pathways Shelter\, and President of Espanola Community Matanza. \n\n\n\n\n\nFernando RuizChef and Founder of Entrepreneurial Institute of Northern New MexicoAt the age of 13 through his early 20’s\, Fernando Ruiz was involved with a gang\, trafficking weapons and drugs. He had spent several birthdays incarcerated for his offenses. It was during this incarceration\, that he earned his GED\, and upon release\, attended culinary school. As a chef\, Fernando holds the distinction of appearing and winning Food Network’s Guy’s Grocery Games\, Chopped\, and Beat Bobby Flay\, where he took top honors over Bobby Flay with his Chiles en Nogada dish. \n\n\n\n\n\nJimmy Santiago BacaPoet and AuthorBaca was born in Santa Fe County\, NM. Abandoned by his parents atthe age of 2\, he was eventually placed in an orphanage. At 13\, he ran away to live on the streets and by the age of 21\, was convicted and incarcerated on drug possession charges. While serving a five-year sentence in a maximum security prison\, he learned to read and began to turn his life around\, eventually emerging as a prolific artist of the spoken and written word. \n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Ana Chavez-MancillasDirector of the NLBHA “Bob Martinez Center of Innovation”Before she joined NLBHA Ana worked for over 20 years providing bilingual and bicultural mental health and substance abuse services to children and families. She has 24+ years in recovery and strives to help others not only with substance abuse issues but also other mental health issues as she fully understands that these issues more times than not go together hand in hand.

SUMMARY:Trauma Informed Care Pt 3: Using Trauma Informed Care to Improve Patient and Self Care
DESCRIPTION:Trauma looks different for each of us\, and the approach must also be tailored in a culturally mindful way to promote healing and recovery. \nIs this 3-part training\, we focus on the six basic principles or pillars of Trauma Informed Care as outlined by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) that includes: safety\, connections\, and managing emotions. We will also explain how to use this information to accurately assess patients\, improve provider-patient relationships\, understand what a trauma informed organization is while minimizing distress and maximizing patient autonomy. We will also discuss multidisciplinary collaboration and trauma-informed care in diverse settings. \nWhen: Thursday\, April 4\, 2024  from 9am-11:00am (Mountain Time) \nThe free virtual course will be available via Zoom. This Training is open to residents of New Mexico and El Paso only.  \nThese trainings will be conducted by Dr. J. Rocky Romero\, LMSW. Dr. Romero completed his doctoral studies at the University of New Mexico in Language\, Literacy and Sociocultural Studies. As a trainer/consultant for NLBHA\, he is focused on culturally appropriate treatment while reducing health disparities for people of color.
